Hurricane Ike

Well everyone, I've been through Ike and survived. We have no power, but we're watching TV, yesterday I played Xbox. Today I'm online writing this letter. I believe in the power of preparation.

People are saying it might be nearly a week or more, possibly a month, before our power is restored. I live in an apartment about 45 minutes south (In Humble) so I went up to Mom's and Dad's to ride out the storm. Shawn stayed in the Mall, locked in for 3 days guarding.

I drove to Humble yesterday to check my home and stuff. There are literally dozens of dead power lines that I had to drive over, and I had to weave around and through some others. There are lights literally on the ground or hanging so low that the light would scrape against the hood of my car if I didn't weave around.

There are lines miles long at the few gas stations that were brought online with power over the last 2 days. I'm suppose to go to work today I think but the phone towers are very limited on signal strength (damaged or out of power themselves) and so I can't call anyone. I can send a text. It works like this: I'll write my text, and send. It'll sit in my outbox until I get a sliver of signal and then "swoosh" there it goes. I can hold a semi consistent conversation that way because I do have blips of signal regularly, but if I actually make a call it'll drop nearly instantly.

2 days later (last night really) things cooled off significantly. God wiped out Houston for the first time in 25 years then goes "oops, sorry here let me make it a little better." And gave us a cold front. LOL I slept last night with my sheet over me. LOL It felt GOOD.
Today people are dashing like mad to some gas stations but we're sitting pretty, with enough gas left for one more day on the generator deciding if we should or shouldn't go fill everything up again. We're not panicking like everyone else because of being ready early.

I've got to get now. We're cooking breakfast on our gas stove. hehe
